Conditions specify: substances screened (standard panels ± ETG ± specialized additions like buprenorphine compliance), frequency (weekly common at start, stepping down), randomness (call-in or same-day notice systems), location (probation office, contracted labs), and WHO PAYS (typically you — $15–50 per test adding up fast).

Positives, dilutes, and misses — the three failure modes

• Positive: confirmation testing applies; prescription defenses route through court documents/pharmacy records — bring proof proactively
• Dilute: treated as suspicious regardless of negative result; repeated dilutes escalate to observed collections or sanctions
• Missed appointment: frequently sanction-equivalent to positive — the system reads avoidance as information

ETG and specialty additions

Alcohol-related offenses almost always add ETG/EtS urine testing (80-hour lookback) and sometimes transdermal ankle monitors or SCRAM devices. DUI contexts may mandate interlock devices independent of urine testing. Marijuana-state-legalization provides NO probation defense — court orders supersede state law personally.
